Ayutthaya period, 17th Century, bronze, H29,5cm
From the estate of Dr. Otto Schwend (1892-1951), collected in Thailand between 1926 and 1938, and since then permanently in the family’s possession (document available).
The face of Buddha is displaying a divine expression with semi-closed eyes below perfectly symmetrical eyebrows, running into his nose bridge. The full lips form a benevolent smile. His elongated earlobes are adorned with earrings in pendeloque shape.
The upper body is ornamented with a sophisticated necklace and bracelets. Buddha’s head is wearing a crown terminating in a tapering finial secured with a tiara finely cast with an exquisite floral design around a central stylized flower-head.
