Late Sukhothai period (Kampheang Phet), circa 15th century
Gilded bronze
H22xW14cm
A fine bronze figure of the Buddha is seated in virasana with this right hand lowered in touching the earth position and the left resting in his lap. The uttarasangha covers the left shoulder and the sanghati in inverted V form hangs down to the navel. Small snail-like curls cover the head and ushnisha, topped by an elegant flame finial. Extensive traces of gilding are still visible on the surface.
Kamphaeng Phet was a royal city in the Sukhothai kingdom and also an important strategic town during the following Ayutthaya kingdom.
